6-Hour Refresher Course

Instructor: Toni Zimmerman, PhD, LMFT

Toni is a Professor in the Human Development and Family Studies Department at Colorado State University. She is a CSU University Distinguished Teaching Scholar and the Director for the Marriage and Family Therapy graduate program which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).  Toni is an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor who has been teaching courses on supervision for over 25 years.  In addition to her passion for teaching and supervision, Toni is a dedicated researcher with over 100 published journal articles and chapters. Her areas of publication include Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice in Family Therapy Supervision, Training, and Practice.  An additional area that Toni and her colleagues are known for is the development and implementation of a youth mentoring program called Campus Connections: Therapeutic Youth Mentoring. This program utilizes a unique family systems model and provides integrated family therapy services to youth who have experienced adversity. Campus Connections is licensed to other Universities nationally and internationally. Toni and her colleagues have published outcomes for both undergraduate and clinical graduate college students and youth who participate in Campus Connections and they are honored to have received numerous local and national awards based on the impact of the program.

To maintain the highest quality systemic/relational supervisors in the field, AAMFT requires that the Approved Supervisors take a comprehensive refresher course prior to the renewal of their designation. This 6-hour course is designed specifically to meet that requirement, and to keep practitioners up-to-date on the practice of relational/systemic clinical supervision. This course will include case examples, didactic and interactional instruction methods. It will focus on current resources available to supervisors, management of ethical and legal issues likely to arise during supervision, utilization of supervision contracts, cultural competence in supervision and therapy, and discussion of the current AAMFT Approved Supervisor requirements 

The overall purposes of this refresher course are: 

  • To provide continuing education to supervisors 
  • To provide an opportunity for supervisors to interact with each other 
  • To assist Approved Supervisor mentors in their responsibilities 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Based on the content of this session, I am able to identify and understand the current supervision literature and the process of developing and the elements of supervision contracts. 

  • Based on the content of this session, I am able to understand ethical and legal issues that arise in supervision and supervision mentoring and the current standards for becoming an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. 

  • Based on the content of this session, I am able to develop an understanding of the significance of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially as it relates to marriage and family therapy supervisor training.

To maintain the highest quality systemic/relational supervisors in the field, AAMFT requires that Approved Supervisors take a refresher course prior to the renewal of their designation. This course is designed specifically to meet that requirement and to keep participants up to date on the practice of systemic/relational clinical supervision. This online course includes a 3-hour interactive face-to-face online session; and requirements of presentations, readings, contract checklist, and updating a contract. There are no tests or quizzes for this course. Please note that this is a course, not a workshop, and requires time to prepare before the interactive session. As such, we highly recommend that you register for your desired session at least one week in advance to the session date to ensure that you receive all information needed for the course and have time to prepare.
