Tips for Finding the Right Supervisor
Finding the right match for supervision is a very important process, as this individual will play a key role in your development as a therapist. You will be spending 1.5 hours a week with this individual and your hard-earned income to pay for supervision so you will want to be deliberate about your decision.

Below is a list of possible questions to ask of potential supervisors:

  • What is your educational background?
  • What client populations do you/have you worked with?
  • Are you currently working with a supervisee?
  • How many supervisees do you have currently?
  • How many years experience do you have supervising?
  • What is your theoretical orientation?
  • How would you describe your supervisory style?
  • What does a typical supervision session look like?
  • How much do you charge?
  • What times/days do you have available?
  • How would you typically go about helping if I felt really stuck on a case?
  • What role do you play in helping your supervisees prepare for the licensure exams?
  • How do your supervisees do on the national written and state oral exams?

In addition, you might ask for the names and contact information of two people who this individual has supervised. Make contact with them and find out about their experience in supervision.

Thanks to Melissa Dodson and Jennifer Patterson who provided many of the above questions based on their actual discussions with potential supervisors.
