Oklahoma State University is located in Stillwater, OK and offers a Master of Science Degree Specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. This is the only Marriage and Family Therapy program in the state of Oklahoma accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. The MFT program at OSU is a 2.5 year program and requires a completion of 63 credit hours. Students have the option of completing a graduate thesis project or taking additional coursework to gain certificates in various areas. Students are required to complete a 500 hour practicum at the end of the program. Around half of students’ clinical hours are conducted at Center for Family Services (the state-of-the-art, on-campus clinic) enabling students to receive high quality supervision and training. Students conduct the other half of their clinical hours in a community agency at their externship placements, enabling them to gain unique experience with various populations and clinical issues. Small cohort sizes (averaging 8 students per year) allow faculty to provide individualized attention in fostering the development of students’ research and clinical skills.
The OSU faculty encourages the investigation of professional organization and experiences as a crucial element of student’s development as MFTs. Over the previous year, students either presented or attended professional conferences across the country, including AAMFT, OKAMFT, NCFR, OKCFR, the International Fatherhood Conference, the National Extension Conference, AAIDD, and the Children’s Behavioral Health conference. Students at OSU receive training in filial and PCIT play therapy and are certified in the PREPARE/ENRICH curriculum for premarital couples. Many students also receive specified training to become facilitators for the Co-Parenting for Resilience course for divorcing or separated couples with children.
