  • Who can supervise me?
    • If you are working in Indiana and hold an Associate Marriage Family Therapist license, you must be supervised by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has at least five (5) years of experience or an equivalent supervisor. Please review the application instructions.
  • How do I calculate my post degree hours?
    • If you are working in Indiana, your post-degree hours must be obtained under the Marriage and Family Therapist Associate license. You must hold your Associate license for two years.
  • What is an Associate license?
    • An Associate Marriage and Family Therapist license is for individuals to obtain post degree experience and supervision. Associate licenses may only be renewed twice.
  • If I have criminal history, can I still get licensed?
    • You may still apply for licensure, but eligibility for licensure will depend upon the individual facts and circumstances of your criminal history.  You will be required to present a brief statement and supporting documents of each incident. This information will be reviewed by the Board to determine your eligibility.
  • Is my Continuing Education going to count?
    • You may review our list of Continuing Education Providers under the Renewal Information Section. If you are looking for a specific course for CE, please visit the home page of the listed Providers to see what is available.
  • What is the difference between Form I and Form II?
    • Form I verifies your post-degree supervision while you were employed. Form II verifies your post-degree experience and employment. These forms must have matching time frames.
  • What is the difference between Category I CE and Category II CE?
    • Please review the Renewal Information, Continue Education Categories for specific information.
  • What is the best way to check on the status of my application?
    • You may track your application through your online portal. As items are processed, they will be checked off as completed on your online checklist. Please be advised that if you have sent in items but do not see that requirement checked off, that indicates that item is still under review. The best way to ensure timely processing of documents is to upload them through the online portal.
  • What are the steps for obtaining my Indiana license if I hold a license in another State?
    • To qualify for licensure through reciprocity, you must show proof that you hold a current Active license in another State and have passed an equivalent National Exam. Please review the reciprocity application instructions for more information.
  • What do I need to do if I would like to perform telehealth as a Marriage and Family Therapist?
    • If you hold an Indiana license and are physically located outside of Indiana, you must apply for a Telehealth Certificate through your online account before performing telehealth services to patients located within Indiana. Simply choose Initial Application, Telehealth, and your license level. Please visit the Telehealth page here: https://www.in.gov/pla/professions/telehealth-home/. If you hold an Indiana license and are physically located within the State, you do NOT need a Telehealth Certificate to provide telehealth services to individuals located within Indiana.
  • Can I diagnose as part of my practice?
    • Those licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist may diagnosis provided they meet the educational training, experience, and requirements. Diagnosis does not include physical diagnosis.
  • What laws govern Marriage and Family Therapy?
    • Supervision- IC 25-23.6-8-2.7 and 839 IAC 1-4.
    • Associate- IC 25-23.6-8
    • Criminal History- IC 25-1-1.1-6
    • Continuing Education- 839 IAC 1-6-1
    • Diagnosis- IC 25-23.6-11-4
