Members of the LGBTQIA+ community face a number of disparities and challenges with accessing care. There is a significant need for expanding access to affirming and appropriate care for LGBTQ+ individuals. LGBTQ+ individuals face staggering difficulties when it comes to compassionate and readily-available physical health care, mental health care and school support. LGBTQ+ identifying individuals are at a high risk of disproportionate negative health outcomes and barriers to affirming and appropriate care. Nearly one quarter of transgender patients forgo medical care due to a concern that a provider will mistreat them due to their gender identity. At least, 8% of LGB respondents and 29% of transgender respondents in a national survey indicated that a care providers had refused to see them on the basis of the sexual orientation or gender identity. LGB youth attempt suicide five times more than their non-LGB peers. Rural communities are on average less accepting of protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. This presentation will provide understanding on the importance of creating inclusive care environment, the ethics of caring for this population, increased education for care teams, and expanding access to care.
