Provider Wellness: A Developmental and Longitudinal Framework

When:  Mar 23, 2023 from 08:00 AM to 09:30 AM (PT)
Burnout has been described as an “epidemic” impacting medical and mental health care practitioners and the quality of care they provide. There are both potent external structural barriers and internal personal resistances to responding forcefully and comprehensively to the challenge of burnout. This discussion introduces a developmental and longitudinal framework for provider wellness that can serve as the foundation for personal and professional resilience as a health care provider. A model curriculum will be presented comprised of foundational practices, intrapersonal skills, and interpersonal skills, each level building on the previous but also standing alone as essential capacities. Four fundamental applications of these skills (self, client, trainee, and MH/medical colleague) will be discussed. The overall aim is to present a model and provoke critical discussion of its elements and real-world application as providers on the boundary of mental and medical health. Can we in the MedFT community coalesce around a shared framework and vision for resiliency?

Learning Objectives:
1) Be able to identify internalized, cultural, and structural barriers to wellness programming for health care providers.
2) Learn curricular components of a developmental, longitudinal, sequenced model of resilience training.
3) Understand how to apply this model of resilience training to self, patients, trainees, and other health care providers within and across professional fields.
