What is a Network?

AAMFT Interest Networks

What is the difference between a Geographic Interest Network and a Topical Interest Network?

In 2017, AAMFT Members voted to adopt a different membership structure tailored to support career development. Members were invited to participate in a survey to assess particular areas of interest, focus groups, as well as leadership positions on a voluntary basis.

Topical Interest Networks are member-led and focus on specializations within the practice of family therapy.

  • Couples and Intimate Relationships
  • Family Therapists in Healthcare
  • Family Therapists in Schools
  • MFTs Working in trauma
  • Queer and Trans Advocacy Network
  • Systemic Therapy Across the Lifespan
  • Telehealth and Technology
  • Working with Military Personnel and their Families
  • Margins to Center: Cultural Connections among C/MFTs

Benefits of joining a TIN

How can one join?

There are two ways of joining: The first is during the annual renewal. There is an option for Members to join in the application for a specific TIN and the second is for Members to join before the renewal period, simply go online to aamft.org or call 703-838-9808.

Topic of Interest not listed?

No worries, each spring applications will be sent to Members to submit new topics of interest. The Component Evaluation Committee will meet to evaluate new topics submitted. Check out the eNews for information about topical interest networks.

Geographic Interest Networks offers Members the option of joining their state Interest Network. Canadians also can join their provinces. The purpose is that members in each state or province have their own wants and needs as well as challenges and opportunities. Think strength in numbers! The focus is on local advocacy, education, and networking. Think state or province specific! These state or province programs are listed in the Engagement Programs Directory and are linked on membership applications and online renewal forms.

State of Florida: Marriage and Family Therapy Interest Network

The Florida Interest Network aka FIN became operational July 2018. FIN plans to continue the long history of the division in being a strong leader in Florida for the MFT profession by providing professional development opportunities and dedicated advocacy and professional lobbyist representation efforts in the state legislature. FIN will be housed in cyberspace, a virtual home base for members who are without a local chapter and/or want the convenient presence of being a part of an online community. Think no commuting! FIN will provide and support professional educational opportunities for Student Members as well as licensed professionals in behavioral healthcare fields (LCSW, LMHC, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Nursing, and Case Managers) and collaborate with other family-friendly organizations for the care of families. Think inclusive! FIN provides a way for professionals to connect and access resources and training that focus on the systemic perspective. FIN will have a quarterly eNewsletter to apprise members of news in Florida regarding the profession. There will be biannual training/workshops with CEUs beginning in 2019. And more!
