About Access MFTs Map

This map highlights states with portability-friendly legislation, as evaluated by the Access MFTs team. A state is considered portability-friendly if it allows an MFT with a license in good standing from another jurisdiction to meet requirements for licensure by endorsement without unnecessary barriers.

Common barriers include:

  • Statutory language requiring licenses to be “substantially equivalent,” which can be reinterpreted case by case and create obstacles.

  • Excessive years-of-experience requirements that exclude many mobile LMFTs who are actively accepting new clients.

Access MFTs States are those where the Coalition has advocated for improved licensure by endorsement or portability. Portability-Friendly States are those that have independently passed similar legislation.
