Licensure in Maine

For Unlicensed Practitioners:

1. You are not legally allowed to engage in clinical practice without Conditional Licensure.

2. Hours towards full licensure do not begin until you have procured your Conditional License.

3. The process of Conditional Licensure can take a long time. If you are moving to Maine, from out-of-state, to begin a new therapy position, we suggest you begin the process as soon as you have accepted the job.

4. Major items you will need for your Conditional License Application:

  • A supervisory statement from your graduate supervisor/ internship supervisor

  • Documentation of your hours (both direct and indirect--paperwork and phone calls count!)

  • The print-outs of all your syllabi from your graduate courses--which must correspond to what you fill in on your course sheet

  • 3 recommendations

  • Your personal disclosure statement

  • A check for $246.00

5. Be warned. Each time you fill something out incorrectly, they will send it back.  This is can make the process so long.

6. Once they do approve your application, you will receive a written letter of approval to take the national exam. You may not take the exam, or even register, until you have this letter. It will cost about $250.  Overall, the process will cost about $500.

7. After you pass the exam, it will be at least another month until you receive your Conditional License.
