Advocating on Behalf of Maine MFTs

AAMFT's Maine Network has a proud tradition of advocating for mental health issues at the State and Federal level. The Maine Network believes that change at any level impacts the lives of our communities, clients, and ourselves. We believe that LMFT's have a specialized set of skills that promote growth and foster change.  Through legislation, we have achieved professional parity at many levels.

Licensing ~ LMFT first licenses were issued in 1992 by the State of Maine.

Third Party Reimbursement ~ In May of 2005, LD 28 took effect, mandating third party reimbursement of LMFT's in Maine.

Professional Parity ~ In January 2006, when LD 28 became fully in effect, parity or professional equivalency between Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists with Licensed Clinical Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors was achieved by mandating that LMFTs be reimbursed equivalently.

MaineCare (Medicaid) ~ On July 1, 2006  the Department of Health and Human Services adopted a rule change to Section 65 of the MaineCare Benefits Manual, which governs mental health services, to include LMFT's and LMFT-C's allowing for MaineCare parity.
