"Deepening the Relationship With Our Emotions"

When:  Aug 25, 2023 from 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM (ET)

Description

Everyone has emotions that move, provoke, and organize us, yet so few of us recognize how to connect them to our core needs. This webinar is about deepening our relationship to our emotions.  While some of the information about embodiment, arousal, valence, and processing may be familiar to you as a mental health professional, using queer theory to unpack and nuance emotions will provide a new lens for deepening your relationship to them.  Dr. Stillwell will address methods for tracking and processing emotions as “teammates” rather than as “adversaries” as we attempt to make meaning and meet our needs.  At its core, this webinar is a framework and psychoeducational tool for emotional learning and growth that you can use with yourself but also bring to your clinical work.

Learning Objectives:

After this workshop, attendees will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate how one’s emotions help meet core needs.
  2. Articulate how queer theory deepens emotional intelligence.
  3. Utilize the framework as a ready-made clinical tool.

About the Speaker

Daniel Stillwell, Ph.D

Daniel Stillwell (he/him) is a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) at the South Charlotte branch of Matone Counseling. He has an LMFT in North Carolina and is a nationally credentialed (AAMFT) MFT supervisor. After receiving his masters in MFT from Louisville Seminary, he went on to earn a PhD in Family Therapy from Saint Louis University. He has practiced on and off since 2008, spending several years also as a professor of MFT for different universities. His passion for client care is a great match for Matone Counseling and he is delighted to be a part of the team.

Daniel’s clinical expertise is firmly rooted in his relational work. His client load is primarily couples, but also sees individuals, adult families, and late adolescents. Even when seeing individual clients, Daniel has a keen eye for how the interactions and dynamics between people are brought into those sessions as well. He believes that change is more pervasive and lasts longer when the change is integrated into the relationships clients hold dear. He has found particular effectiveness with high-achieving people and people who access their spiritual (not just Christian) side. He works with clients to empower them to be able to empower themselves and those in their lives.

A vital part of Daniel’s practice is his commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. He has extensive training on the different dimensions and issues associated with sexuality and gender. He compassionately comes alongside people in their relationship restructuring, coming out processes, or even in more “standard” relational issues. Know that Daniel is not going to be judging or unduly elevating the queer dimensions beyond their scope. This also means he is especially fluent and practiced at working with the poly/kink communities, regardless of structure or lack of hierarchy. These polycules (whatever the shape) are prime for relational therapy, even if it is simply wanting to move from getting by to thriving. Everyone deserves a chance to have someone empower them to create the changes they want for themselves and their loved ones.

In addition to his work as a therapist and coach, Daniel also provides supervision and consultation for other professionals. If you are in the process of seeking your North Carolina LMFT or LCMHC and would like individual or group supervision, Daniel would love to connect to see if the fit is appropriate for supervisory work. He has extensive supervision experience for early career professionals, and can even align supervision paradigms to model your theory of choice. His language for his own clinical model is “postmodern, experiential cyberneticist.”
