The aim of this workshop is to offer Marriage and Family Therapists and other clinicians insights and strategies for engaging queer, gender expansive, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and Culture in sex therapy. Grounded in ethnosexuality, this presentation will encourage attendees to consider the intersections of race, gender, sexual orientation, and sexuality, and the impact these identities may have in the therapeutic space. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical strategies, attendees will learn to navigate positionality within sexuality. Therapists will gain practical tools to address complex issues that may be acting as barriers for clients to receiving competent sexological clinical care.
Learning objectives:
- After this workshop, attendees will be able to explain the concept of ethnosexuality.
- After this workshop, attendees will be able to name skills needed for integrating sex therapy techniques into work with QTBIPOC clients.
- At the end of this workshop attendees will be able to identify and explore self-of-the-therapist issues that arise from the course activities and experiences
Your presenter, Anne Mauro (she/her), is a bi-racial Black, cis, queer, woman, born and raised in the beautiful Coast Salish Territory in Washington State. She is an AASECT Certified Sex Educator, Certified Sex Therapist, and Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor as well as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Her private practice centers systemic sex therapy and her academic focus has been on how colonialist harm has impacted modern day sexuality. She is the author of “The Colonization of Black Sexualities: A Clinical Guide to Relearning and Healing” which bridges these two areas of her expertise.
