An AAMFT Approved Supervisor is a Marriage and Family Therapist who has completed the education, experience and supervision mentoring requirements established by the AAMFT. Join us for this hour-long discussion with active AAMFT approved supervisors, Saliha Bava, PhD, Lastenia Francis, PhD and Carol Podgorski, Phd. During this hour we will explore: reasons to explore AAMFT Approved Supervision, requirements of becoming and maintaining active status as well as how this designation impacts the clinical and professional work of our panelists.

This Professional Development presentation is a non-CEC event, but is part of the New York Marriage and Family Therapists commitment to advancing the profession of Marriage and Family Therapists by providing career growth education and opportunities. PRESENTER BIOS: 

Dr. Saliha Bava, PhD 

Saliha has 20+ years of experience in human and organizational development, diversity, and collaboration. She is an AAMFT-approved Supervisor. She was elected to the American Family Therapy Academy‘s (AFTA) Board of Directors (2012-2018). Saliha is an Associate Professor at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Mercy College at Dobbs Ferry,  and advisor at the Taos Doctoral & Diploma Program. She is a Taos Institute Associate and is currently the Director of Research and consultant to the International Trauma Studies Program. Saliha received her PhD in Human Development with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech. She has completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders from Stanford Graduate School of Business. As the former associate director of Houston Galveston Institute, she focused on organization development, community engagement, and leadership in addition to therapy, training, and research. She is the founding council member of the International Certificate in Collaborative-Dialogic Practices.

 

Dr. Lastenia Francis, PhD

Dr. Lastenia Francis is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a certified trauma therapist. Dr. Francis has been practicing since 2014 with an attention to helping minority populations. Dr. Francis has provided clinical services in an outpatient clinic in the South Bronx working with low-income communities and communities of color, an intensive preventative program, at the Veterans Affairs as a Readjustment Counselor, and built a private practice that focuses on building strong families in communities of color. Dr. Francis previously taught at Mercy College in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and continues to act as a mentor to developing Marriage and Family Therapists as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Dr. Francis continues to have an insatiable appetite for helping people of color maximize their potential in how they relate to themselves, their spouse, and their family and demonstrates that in her research interest. Dr. Francis was drawn to academia through her passion for training more social justice clinicians to help strengthen families, especially those in minority and underserved communities. 

 

Dr. Carol Podgorski, PhD

Dr. Carol Podgorski completed her doctoral degree in sociology and has master’s degrees in Public Health and in Marriage and Family Therapy.  She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry where she also holds the following leadership positions -- Director of the Finger Lakes Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease; Clinic Director of the University of Rochester Memory Care Program; Director of Alzheimer’s Disease Support Programs for the University of Rochester Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program; and Co-Director of the URMC’s Family Therapy Training Program. Her academic interests include family therapy in dementia, medical family therapy approaches to caregiving, and development of family systems and relationally-oriented models of dementia care.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations to any paid event and any subsequent request for refund must be made in writing no later than 15 days prior to the start of the event. Upon cancellation you have the right to request that your fee (in full) be held (for up to one year) and used toward another event registration from this same AAMFT Network. If you prefer a refund, cancellations made more than 45 days before the event will receive a 75% refund. Cancellations made between 44 and 15 days before the event will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be offered within 14 days of the event.
