Description

This in-person training offers 6 CEs (3 in suicide, 3 in ethics) and will be divided into two sessions.

Session One: Beyond Individual Psychopathology: Rekindling Hope, Community and a Life Worth Living

with Julie Golkowski, MA, LCMHC

Young people can be seen as the “canary in the coal mine” alerting us to the distress in our world. The Surgeon General reports that the mental health of our young people is “the defining public health crisis of our time.” As systemic thinkers, MFT’s have historically been on the forefront of exploring transdisciplinary voices and ways of “knowing” by inviting different sources of knowledge, wisdom, and experience to inform our practices.

This training will explore narratives from a variety of thought leaders related to the drivers of the epidemic of loneliness, social-emotional distress, and suicidal ideation in today’s youth. We will explore self of the therapist through the lens of polyvagal theory, in order to move toward greater self-regulation and effective co-regulation with our clients and their families. We will examine opportunities for supporting other co-regulators as well, including care providers, teachers, parents, and other guardians. Finally, we will Identify creative multi-systemic interventions to build hope, belonging and social connection to community, and a life worth living.

Learning Goals:

  1. Explore socio-cultural contributors to the social and emotional distress of young people and the epidemic of disconnection in our culture.
  2. Through the lens of Critical Suicidology, recognize new perspectives in understanding suicidal and its prevention.
  3. Identify self of the therapist challenges and build effective self-regulation skills and explore ways to shore up ourselves along with other care providers.
  4. Connect with a sense of hope and optimism by exploring novel ways of intervening.

Julie

Julie Golkowski, MA, LCMHC is a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor of AAMFT.  She received her master’s degree in counseling from NYU and then a professional diploma from Hofstra University in marriage and family therapy.  Her passion for mentoring and supervising the next generation of MFTs has led her to serve in a variety of nonprofit agencies and graduate programs. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings including residential treatment, a clinical mental health agency, private practice and as a principal consultant serving the National Guard Family Programs and psychological services. She has presented and provided training nationally on topics including suicide prevention, intervention and postvention; trauma informed treatment modalities; and the mental health needs of a variety of vulnerable populations. Some of the things that bring Julie joy are getting her hands in clay and soil, practicing yoga, hiking, and spending time with family.

Session Two: Taking the Anxiety out of  Risk Management

with Andrea Daly, JD

New Hampshire practitioners consistently face challenges in their practice.  Certain issues can catch practitioners off-guard and are the more common subject of licensing Board complaints.  This training will address issues of particular concern in recent years in New Hampshire, including creation of records, release of records, work with members of high-conflict and/or Court-involved families, multiple roles, and reporting laws.  Lastly, practitioners will learn about important administrative changes to the Board of Mental Health due to its inclusion in the Office of Professional Licensure.

Learning Goals:

  1. Learn the requirements for record keeping and understand how to maintain records to protect you in high risk situations.

  2. Understand particularly problematic areas with regard to reporting obligations and how to navigate those issues successfully.

  3. Learn your responsibilities with regard to release of records and confidential information.

  4. Identify and address key steps practitioners can take from a risk management perspective to provide mental health services safely and effectively.

Andrea

Andrea Daly, JD is a partner at Robinson, Boesch, Sennott & Daly, P.A. Her areas of practice include probate law and mental health law. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston University in 1991 and her Juris Doctor degree from Vermont Law School in 1997. Andrea has had extensive experience within the mental health field. She has defended dozens of physicians, social workers and psychotherapists before their state licensing boards and understands how the boards operate and what the boards' expectations are for licensees. A large part of Andrea’s practice involves training and providing on-going risk management advice to licensees on issues related to ethics, confidentiality, informed consent, reporting laws, records management, and other legal issues related to mental health care and medical care.
