This 90-minute workshop will discuss the impact of Anti-Black Racism on the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of Black youth in schools in the United States. This workshop will provide a definition of anti- blackness and discuss its prevalence in the American schooling system and society at large. The specific mental health needs and challenges of Black youth will be discussed. Particular attention will be given to how to identify anti-black racism and discrimination in school-based settings and the role systemic therapists can play in addressing Anti-Black racism with students, their families, and the wider school community. Examples of how clinicians might engage in anti-racist, and trauma informed work and advocacy will be provided.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to define anti-Black racism and identify its impact on the mental health of Black students in the United States.
- Participants will be able to describe 1-2 specific mental health challenges facing Black students and their families
- Participants will be able to develop 1 -2 strategies to intervene with Black students who experience the effects of anti-Black racism in schools
