This webinar will explore the intersections of sex and gender identity. For transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive (TNBGE) clients, gender dysphoria can significantly impact sexual desire, satisfaction, and relational intimacy. Each TNBGE client has a unique experience with sexuality and dysphoria. Affirming care involves acknowledging sexual trauma histories, adapting language use, and supporting clients in processing the intersection of sexuality and gender. This includes fostering open dialogue, co-constructing affirming sexual scripts, and addressing boundaries, desires, and consent.
Through his experience as a professor, supervisor, sex therapist, and researcher, Dr. Martin will share best practices of transgender affirming therapeutic care and advocacy centered around sexuality. Through his research he aims to highlight resiliency and euphoria. Clinicians should remain informed on current terminology, affirming resources, and sex-positive as identity-affirming care enhances client resilience, reduces distress, and supports positive mental health outcomes.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Tristan K. Martin is an Assistant Teaching Professor and AAMFT Approved Supervisor in the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy at Syracuse University. He instructs courses that focus on sexuality and LGBTQ relational dynamics and is the faculty advisor for the MFT Trans Team. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, he provides support for the LGBTQ community, specifically trans clients navigating transition. Dr. Martin’s research focuses on transgender sexuality and has presented at multiple conferences, conducted educational trainings, and contributed publications on transgender issues. In his free time, he enjoys traveling with his family and friends, spending time at the beach, weightlifting, and working on his ’88 Bronco with his canine companion, Kameron.
