Description
In this presentation, attendees will learn about common challenges faced by couples in which either one or both members identifies as queer and from an ethnic/racial minority status. Couples with complex, multiple intersectional identities benefit from more in-depth explorations of the ways in which their assumptions of unwritten relationship rules and expectations of one another impact the experience of their love. Strategies to help anchor complex conversations and common relationship concerns for these unique couples will be presented and discussed.
Learning Objectives
After this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the components of the DEEP framework for attuning intercultural couples
- Identify ways in which layers of intersectionality can “stack” and cause distress, as well as ways to alleviate that distress
- Understand when to consult, refer, or encourage client to connect with their larger community to supplement therapeutic work

About the Speaker
Harpreet Malla, Ph.D
Dr. Harpreet Malla is a licensed clinical psychologist who is currently in private practice in LA & Orange County in Southern California. She identifies as a 1.5 generation Indian-American feminist and enjoys navigating the cultural nuances those experiences have brought her. Dr. Malla has a passion for working with identity development as it pertains to LGBTQ and bicultural or immigrant populations, and recently has seen a rise in couples navigating arranged or other nontraditional marital practices in her work such as poly constellations, those who practice kink, or are in interracial relationships.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Malla is pioneering research on the evolution of arranged marriages in the South Asian diaspora and has authored a chapter on this topic. She has also taught at the university and graduate level, and hosted a variety of mental health workshops for corporate, university, and community events. She is also the Diversity Chair for the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, where she advocates for marginalized groups and seeks to promote understanding through education.
