Recent Federal legislation will open MFTs as providers for Medicare in 2024. Historically, Medicare patients often sought help from non-MFT clinicians due to in-network access, even though many presenting issues involve their familial relationships and changing roles. This presentation will dive into the ethics of working with an aging population using Medicare as a framework to explore the opportunities and dilemmas MFTs may face.
Friday: Dr. Jacob Priest
What is family systems theory? It's a question that stumps many family therapists. Family systems theory is often referred to as what makes family therapists different from other therapists, but how can that be when we are unsure what it is? In this presentation, I'll trace the history, development, and current state of family systems theory. I'll argue that we lost our systemic focus when we collapsed theory, diagnosis, and intervention into one thing. I'll make a case for family systems as the best theory on which to build a practice, demonstrate how family systems theory can help us better diagnosis, and how good diagnosis can set the stage or effective intervention.
