From Self of the Therapist to System of the Therapist: Inclusive MFT Ethics

When:  Mar 12, 2021 from 01:30 PM to 04:45 PM (CT)
Associated with  AAMFT Oklahoma Network
This ethics workshop will address an overview of MFT ethics in practice through a justice-informed lens. The presenter will involve various modalities to engage participants in reflective ethical MFT practice, including: 1.) a conversation guided by a PowerPoint presentation outlining literature and recommendations/best practices, including the AAMFT Code of Ethics, and 2.) interactive activities to engage the audience in small and large group discussions. The audience will be invited to consider the relationships between current systemic social problems and MFT practice. Examples include race and the therapist’s role in welfare checks, the meaning of intersectionality and positionality of therapists and clients in the therapy process, ethics related to work with LGBTQ+ clients, and therapists’ involvement in legislative advocacy. The session will encourage audience members to shift from “self-of-therapist” to “system-of-therapist” work in an effort to engage in ethical marriage and family therapy practice.
