6 CEU Workshop
This 6-hour workshop will cover three main areas. First, we will review how to establish an ethically-sound telebehavioral health (TBH) practice. We will discuss what material constitutes information to be documented, how to evaluate various storage options, and considerations for confidentiality. Next, we will take a broader look at the impact of technology on our practices. This includes a presentation of joining and relationship building online and how to implement various therapeutic modalities via TBH. Finally, we will consider the ethics around practicing in a world dominated by technology, including guidelines for one’s presentation of their practice online, how to organize the crossover between personal and professional digital spaces, and ethical marketing of one’s practice.
Learning ObjectivesParticipants will:
- Learn how to keep secure digital records
- Be appraised of updates to ethical and legal requirements in practice for CMFTs
- Describe how TBHs impact secret-keeping / confidentiality
- Illustrate how TBH impacts the selection of treatment modalities
- Evaluate the ways in which TBH impact the therapeutic relationship and joining
- Learn strategies to appropriately present yourself online as a professional
- Define appropriate ethical boundaries between professional and personal presences
Presenter: Katherine M. Hertlein, Ph.D., LMFT
Dr. Katherine Hertlein is a Professor in the Couple and Family Therapy Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine. She received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Purdue University Calumet and her Doctorate in Human Development with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Tech.
Across her academic career, she has published over 100 articles and book chapters and 10 books. Recently, Dr. Hertlein and co-authors/editors published third editions of Systemic Sex Therapy and A Clinician's Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy. These books are used in over 30 Couple and Family Therapy training programs around the U.S. In 2017, A Clinician's Guide to Systemic Sex Therapy was awarded the 2017 Book Award and the 2017 Integrative Approaches in Sex Therapy Award from the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Dr. Hertlein has also produced the first multitheoretical model detailing the role of technology in couple and family life published in her latest book, The Couple and Family Technology Framework.
Dr. Hertlein has won numerous awards for research, teaching, mentorship, and supervision across her career. Dr. Hertlein was also awarded a Fulbright Core Scholar Award (2018-2019) and, in this role, served as a Guest Lecturer and Guest Researcher at the University of Salzburg in Salzburg, Austria. Dr. Hertlein is also the Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy. Dr. Hertlein's work has been featured in various media outlets including Men's Health, The APA Monitor, The Atlantic, and The Huffington Post. She lectures nationally and internationally on technology, couples, and sex.
