The Relationship between Self of Therapist and Political Orientation

When:  Mar 19, 2021 from 01:00 PM to 02:30 PM (ET)
Past studies have been able to find a connection between political attitudes, religiosity level and therapeutic outcomes (Gidi, 1994). There has also been research to show that clinician’s values impact their choices in regards to theoretical orientation and attitude towards therapeutic outcomes (Buhler, 1962). However, there has been no research on similar connections within the field of couple and family therapy. Additionally, discourses around self-of-therapist conceptualization have left out how political ideology can impact the therapeutic relationship. Bilgrave and Deluty (2002) argue that therapists should ask themselves regularly how their religious and political beliefs, values, and attitudes may be influencing their practice of therapy—how they see clients and their problems and how they help clients frame and understand their concerns. This presentation aims to discuss the importance of couple and family therapists’ critical understanding of how political orientation can impact their clinical work. Clinicians will also understand how incorporating political conversations in the therapy room can become pivotal therapeutic factors while working with different populations who have been negatively impacted by the current political atmosphere.
