AAMFT JMFT Webinar: Systemic Supervisors of Color

During this webinar, we will expound upon the findings of our modified Delphi study (Anderson et al., 2024) where we explored the unspoken experiences of systemic supervisors of color. We will explain the unique complexities many supervisors of color face as they lead supervision from positions of multiple intersecting identities of both privilege as well as marginalization. In addition to discussing the empirical results of the Delphi study, we will introduce a conceptual framework that can be used to better support supervisors of color as they engage in this work that is deeply shaped by sociocultural nuances and broader systemic forces.

Leslie Anderson, PhD, LMFT is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Family and Consumer Sciences at Morgan State University. She is a Clinical Fellow of AAMFT and an Approved Supervisor. In her program of research, Dr. Anderson focuses on the protective nature of cultural assets (e.g., racial socialization, positive racial identity) on the psychological health and well-being of Black youth and families. Her scholarship has been published in Black Psychology, the Journal of Research on Adolescence, Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and others. She is currently a co-investigator on an NIMH-funded project examining risk and protective factors for suicidality among young Black children and the principal investigator on an NIMHD-funded project that involves culturally adapting a trauma-focused intervention to be responsive to the needs of youth in Baltimore City, MD. Dr. Anderson is also committed to racially and culturally diversifying our workforce of systemic clinicians to help cultivate a discipline that is responsive to the needs of all people. In 2024, she was appointed to a strategic working group by the CEO of AAMFT to help facilitate the establishment of the first COAMFTE-accredited MFT program at a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

Dr. Maxine Notice Ph.D., LMFT, LMHC, NCC is a core faculty member in the Marriage and Family Therapy Online Program at Abilene Christian University-Dallas. She is an AAMFT Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor. She currently serves as an Advisory Committee Member for the AAMFT Minority Fellowship Program (MFP), and as the Treasurer of The Telehealth and Technology Interest Network. Dr. Maxine is passionate about the education and training of marriage and family therapists and hopes to grow the field towards higher levels of cultural competency. Her current research interests include evaluating therapy with interracial couples and multiracial families; multicultural supervision; medical family therapy; and clinician training and development.
