The Couples and Intimate Relationships Topical Interest Network invite you to a clinically oriented presentation worth 1.5 CE credits on the topic working with American couples-low desire and desire discrepancy challenges. Dr. McCarthy will explore the four-session assessment model and the key components of desire/pleasure/eroticism/satisfaction in treatment. Couple sex therapy emphasizes psychosexual skill exercises to build comfort, attraction, trust, and each partner create their preferred sexual scenario. In confronting the power struggle of intercourse or nothing, the couple learn to be intimate and erotic allies who value sensual, playful, and erotic scenarios in addition to intercourse. They develop a couple sexual style that integrates intimacy, pleasure, and eroticism.
Learning Objectives
- Conduct an individual psychological/relational/sexual history.
- Assign and monitor psychosexual skill exercises to build anticipation, promote sexual pleasure, and develop a couple sexual style.
- Help couples develop an individualized relapse prevention plan to maintain sexual satisfaction.
Presenter
Barry McCarthy, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at American University, a diplomate in clinical psychology, a certified sex therapist, and a certified couple therapist. He has published more than 110 professional articles, 29 book chapters, and 14 books. Barry has presented more than 450 professional workshops in the United States and internationally. In 2016 he received the Masters and Johnson award for lifetime contributions to the sexuality field.
