What's Next?: The Difficulties Veterans Face After the Military

When:  Feb 25, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  AAMFT Connecticut
Although there have been improvements in the re-integration of military veterans, there is still much to be done to assist our service members. On the forefront are the mental health concerns that arise post military service, to include years after the servicemember has been discharged from the military. Deployments and military culture have long lasting effects on their relationships and mental health. This training will help you understand mental health illnesses that most commonly affect veterans, help you discuss the risk of suicide with the service member and their families while assessing for factors that might increase their risk, understand how the family system has changed over time and how it will continue to change once the veteran is no longer in the military, provide you with tools to support families and veterans through these transitions, as well as other resources that are available to veterans and their families.

Presenter: Roselind Amaker, LMFT
Roselind Velez Amaker has worked in the mental health field for the past ten years in various roles. She served in the Army for seven years as a mental health counselor. During that time, she deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, working directly with service members to address their mental health needs while in-country. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she became a case manager for the Yale study program called Family Based Recovery helping families struggling with addiction and involved with the Department of Children and Families. Roselind is an advocate for the community in relation to racial and diverse issues, building her relationships within communities, and researching how cultural, multigenerational patterns, and traditions affect the family system. Roselind uses her skills as a bilingual therapist to reach families across different cultures, diversities, and ages. Roselind received her Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Central Connecticut State University and her Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Connecticut in Human Development and Family Studies. Currently, she is practicing family therapy under her own practice Blooming Wellness & Therapeutic Services LLC.
