Every family has generational dysfunctional patterns that are passed down and most people do not realize how these dysfunctional patterns affect them daily. Dr. Murray Bowen, the Father of Marriage and Family Therapy, created theories based on how this dysfunction is passed down in families. These theories are illuminated on a bigger scale in the descendants of African slaves. The interesting part about the dysfunctional patterns that were birthed during slavery is that these patterns were created for survival, as most negative coping skills are. In this presentation, we will explore how dysfunctional generational patterns are created and passed down. Moreover, we will discuss how these dysfunctional generational patterns are present today in 2023 within the African American community and how these dysfunctional patterns may no longer serve a purpose.
