The LGBTQIA+ community is not a monolith. Within the LGBTQIA+ acronym, there are multiple communities present. The purpose of this presentation is to give a high-level introduction to the BIPOC communities within the LGBTQIA+ communities. The presentation will look at the intersection of identities that BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients exist and how that can shape unique experiences that BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients may bring into therapy. Participants will learn the roles of families, including chosen families, and friends in the lives of BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients. Additionally, the romantic relationships of BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients will be explored in order to illuminate the importance of having healthy romantic relationships. Lastly, participants will learn evidenced-based practices that should be considered with BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients.
Objectives of the Program –
1. Understand what intersectionality is and how BIPOC queer and gender diverse individuals exist at the intersection of more than one historically marginalized identity.
2. Explore the unique experiences that BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients may experience and bring into therapy.
3. Learn the roles that families; including chosen families, and friends play in the lives of BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients.
4. Understand the importance of BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients having healthy romantic partnerships for their mental, emotional, and physical health.
5. Learn the evidence-based practices that are best used when working with BIPOC queer and gender diverse clients.
