Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk Training

AMSR teaches best practices in caring, confident suicide care. The Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) training helps health and behavioral health professionals feel confident providing compassionate care to people at risk for suicide. AMSR is based on the latest research and is designed to support safer suicide care practices, such as Zero Suicide. The AMSR research-informed risk formulation model offers key strategies to navigate challenging conversations and systemic barriers. AMSR teaches a prevention-oriented risk formulation focused on planning, not predicting.
WHY AMSR?
Suicidal behavior is a major cause of death and disability in the United States. Over 47,000 people die by suicide each year, the equivalent of one major airliner filled with passengers crashing every day. Hundreds of thousands of people are treated in hospital emergency departments each year following a suicide attempt.

A significant proportion of people who die by suicide have had recent contact with a mental health professional. However, many providers are inadequately trained to assess, treat, and manage suicidal patients or clients.

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk was designed to address that training gap. It teaches essential core competencies that meet the needs of an entire spectrum of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed counselors, social workers, and employee assistance professionals.

This workshop will provide participants with knowledge in the following core competencies:

• Managing one’s own reactions to suicide

• Reconciling the difference and potential conflict between a clinician’s goal to prevent suicide and a client’s goal to eliminate psychological pain through suicide

• Maintaining a collaborative, non-adversarial stance

• Eliciting suicide ideation, behavior, and plans

• Formulating Risk

• Collaboratively developing an emergency plan

• Planning and Responding to the Suicidal Client

• Developing policies and procedures for following clients closely

• Implementing the principles of crisis management

We want to say a big THANK YOU to our sponsor - The SAM Foundation

The SAM Foundation

The SAM Foundation was created by Nicole Goggans and Julie Smith in memory of their brother, Sam Johnson who died by suicide in 2002. It’s mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education. They hope to change the way their communities view mental health and become a resource for those who have been affected by suicide. Under the leadership of Nicole and Julie, The SAM foundation has trained over 5000 individuals in life saving suicide prevention skills. They have also been a key force in creating SPNA, the suicide prevention network of Alabama finally giving Alabama the organized effort of prevention it truly needs and are the lead coordinators in North Alabama. They continue to lobby with state legislatures in hopes of addressing the issue that Alabama has zero suicide prevention funding in their state budget, as well as many other mental health issues the state needs to address for its citizens since it’s daily rate of suicide is higher than the national average.
