Thank you for your interest in our conference!  The purpose of this program is to provide a continuing education opportunity for Alabama therapists to meet the state-required hours of ongoing training and to enhance the proficiencies of therapists with this annually offered conference. 

**Registration includes continental breakfast, hot lunch, and 13 CEs if you attend both days!**
AAMFT is pre-approved as a continuing education sponsor for: National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC): AAMFT has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5209. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. AAMFT is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. Many regulatory boards accept AAMFT event attendance to fulfill CE requirements, but do not have a pre-approval process. If in doubt, check with your board.

Introduction to Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

6.00 CEs

This workshop includes an overview of all aspects of the EFT model including steps and stages, interventions, and application of EFT with couples. The Introduction is taught with a variety of teaching methods including lectures, interactive discussions, and experiential small team groups.

Presenter: Kenny Sanderfer, LMFT

As a Certified EFT Trainer, Kenny educates and trains EFT Therapists across several states. He is the founder and director of EFT Tennessee, Nashville's center for training in Emotionally Focused Therapy. He provides EFT supervision for therapists pursuing EFT certification. As a Certified EFT Therapist, he provides intensive two-day couples therapy in Murfreesboro, TN. He recently co-authored a book with Dr. Sue Johnson, Created for Connection: The Hold Me Tight Guide for Christian Couples.

Kenny completed his undergraduate degree in Agriculture from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. He completed his Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN, where he is now an Adjunct Professor. He is licensed by the state of Tennessee in Marital and Family Therapy (license #564) and is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. When he is away from work you will find him fly fishing, training horses, ranching and spending time with his wife, Suzette and their five grandchildren.

Understanding the Legal and Ethical Guidelines for Digital Practice in the 21st Century

This workshop will enhance the knowledge about legal and ethical guidelines for digital therapy practice.  Participants will learn about HIPAA requirements, confidentiality, security, and encryption, business associates agreements, and how to create social media policy statements.

Presenter: Scott Ketring, PhD, LMFT

Scott A. Ketring is an Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies and the Program and Clinic Director for the Auburn University MFT Center. His research interests focus on families living in poverty, couple relationships, and program services for diverse families. He has 50 published articles, a book, and three book chapters. He has acted as Co-Pi on the Alabama Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education Initiative (AHMREI), a DHHS grant serving Alabama families throughout the state. He is the Chair for the Alabama Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapy, and is the former President of the Alabama Division for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and is the recipient of the AAMFT 2018 Volunteer Award for his dedication to the profession. He is one of the founding members of the Birmingham Recovery Network, a network of agencies and church groups dedicated to addressing poverty, substance abuse, and mental illness in the greater Birmingham area. He has worked as a Program Evaluator for the KCSL In-Home Family Therapy Services for abused and neglect children. He is a frequent speaker on the local, state, and national levels for academic audiences in the areas of ethics, child abuse, training social service workers and therapists, and in-home family services. Dr. Ketring’s research interests focus on how the therapeutic relationship influences couples and family therapy outcomes for those living in poverty. Dr. Feinauer trained him in trauma therapy working with victims of abuse and violence, along with war veterans. He served children in Kansas who were severely abuse and neglect. He has also worked in the Mercy Health Systems ER and ICU crisis settings.

Understanding Updated Rules and Regulations in Alabama and the Ethical Implications

This presentation will provide an overview of the major changes to Alabama's updated rules and regulations that took effect in 2019.  The presentation will address ethical implications for clinical practice and supervision, adjustments that may be needed for clinical practice and supervision, and the parameters required to provide telehealth in Alabama.

Serving Families of Divorce: A new frontier for therapists

In this 3-hour presentation, we will look at the different forms of therapy that can be used with these families: co-parenting counseling, parent coordination, mediation, and reunification therapy.  We will examine the current research about effective ways to help families of divorce. This presentation will help therapists discover practical tools that can be used with divorcing families.  We will also look at how therapists can best help the children not get caught up in the middle of the parental conflict.

Presenter: Sara Dungan, LMFT

Sara is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an Associate Licensed Counselor in Birmingham, AL.  She has over 25 years of experience working with children and families. She grew up in Michigan, and attended the University of California, San Diego where she received a BA in Political Science.  In 1993, she moved to Birmingham, AL and began her professional life with a five-year tenure as a teacher at Pinson Valley High School. After several years of focused investment in her own children, she began working with the children and families at her local church as a Children’s Coordinator. In 2015, she received her Master’s in Counseling in marriage and family therapy and opened her private practice called Sparrow Counseling. Sara is particularly interested and experienced in guiding families through the pain and disappointment of divorce.  She is a Parenting Coordinator, Divorce Mediator, Reunification Therapist and Co-Parenting Counselor.
